During the Multicore Executive Summit, key figures from companies that include Arete Research, Freescale Semiconductor, Texas Instruments, The Linley Group, and Wind River will deliver keynote presentations that provide insight into pivotal aspects of multicore, security, smartphones, and Android technologies. This Executive Summit also includes an enlightening and imaginative panel of experts discussing how the rapid proliferation of multimedia-intensive platforms is accelerating innovation in multicore technologies and dictating new product strategy.

Markus Levy, chairman of the Multicore Expo and president of the Multicore Association, will open the Executive Summit with an update on the state of the multicore industry. "Being that this is the 6th year of Multicore Expo, I've seen many multicore technologies come and go, as well as many that look like they are here to stay," said Mr. Levy. "The leaders in this industry require more than a brilliant product to stay alive, they require imagination, easy-to-use technology, and a solid roadmap."

Wind River's senior vice president of products, Scot Morrison, continues the multicore strategy discussions with his presentation "Critical Steps to Multicore Security in a Connected World", in which Mr. Morrison examines how a radically expanding connected device landscape mandates an equally radical change in how embedded device designers implement security on multicore platforms. "With threats proliferating all markets, at every level of the software design, embedded product designers can't wait for a breach to occur," said Mr. Morrison. "We must design solutions that span the software stack, creating impenetrability, and disallowing device disruption."

During the past few months, the first dual-core mobile phones have been released and there's even been a demonstration of the first quad-core processor for mobile devices. Linley Gwennap, principal analyst of The Linley Group, will discuss this trend to mobile multicore. "Mobile software developers are just working out how to use dual-core processors, and the industry is already moving to deploy quad-core devices later this year," said Mr. Gwennap. "Despite the hardware and software challenges that are arising as mobile system vendors follow in the footsteps of PC makers, multicore mobile devices have become a reality."

As embedded systems take on more complex processing and computing tasks, the next generation of multicore solutions must consider the overall system and unique application requirements. In his talk entitled 'Multicore Visions', Preet Virk, director of Freescale's network segment marketing division, will provide insight into the evolution of multicore SoC innovation that will allow users to make applications more intelligent while balancing software development costs.  Virk points out, "Coming from a corporation involved in networking, consumer, automotive and industrial applications, we've had experience in all major areas of embedded. In my talk I'm going to share an insider's view of the possibilities of multicore SoC development that will allow design teams to maintain their competitive edge."

"More cores don't necessarily yield more processing power, as a matter of fact, adding cores may impair performance if the resulting device is not properly balanced," said Pekka Varis, CTO of multicore and media infrastructure at Texas Instruments. In his talk 'Avoid Undermining the Capabilities of Your Multicore Design', Varis will explain how and why developers should turn their attention to system architecture and the performance of key interfaces when gauging the quality of a new platform.

Arete Research's managing director, Richard Kramer, and director, Brett Simpson, will present "Managing the Mess: Getting to A Billion Smartphones and Other Connected Devices". In this dual-analyst presentation, Kramer and Simpson will provide their independent views on telecoms, software, semis and services, as they relate to the infrastructure surrounding connected devices.

The Executive Summit will conclude with a panel of experts debating the various aspects of "A Boundless Appetite for More, More, More: Android + Multicore Yields Synergy for Embedded Devices". Moderated by Markus Levy, this panel will focus on the technology disruption and innovation opportunities created by the synergy of Android and multicore. "The next-generation multimedia-intensive software platforms that are permeating the embedded landscape are raising the bar for both mobile and traditional GUI-based devices," exclaimed Levy. "Join us as we answer a host of questions including "What new markets are opened from this new user interface and multicore paradigm?"

In addition to the Executive Summit, the three-day Multicore Expo program will include technically-oriented panel discussions, in-depth engineering classes, and sponsored presentations in the Multicore Theatre. These technical sessions will cover a wide range of topics related to the practical application of multicore technology.
