Professor Hu laid the foundations for China's semiconductor industry in Shanghai in 2000 as Deputy General Manager of the Shanghai Zhangjiang (Group) Co., Ltd., and was instrumental in establishing with Dr. Richard Chang the Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), China's first and premier semiconductor fabrication foundry. SMIC is the cornerstone of China's Integrated Circuit Industry Base located within the nationally acclaimed Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park.

After successfully nurturing and solidifying China's semiconductor base, Professor Hu spearheaded the government's initiative for developing China's software high-tech zones. Subsequently, Professor Hu led the development of the renowned Shanghai Pudong Software Park, again within the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park. Under his business management, Professor Hu grew the Shanghai Pudong Software Park into one of the most profitable software business and export centers in China, and for its success, this Park was awarded the distinctions of "National Software Industrial Base" and "National Software Export Base."
Professor Hu now serves as the Chairman of the Board for Shanghai Data Solution Co., Ltd., Chairman of the Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park Development Affairs Consultative Committee and Chairman of the Pudong Information Infrastructure Development Research Consulting Center. Professor Hu also holds executive positions in various industry associations, as well as a distinguished membership to the IT Advisory Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Government. Furthermore, Professor Hu serves as an Adjunct Professor at the prestigious University of Science and Technology of China and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Professor Hu has been recognized by China's President Hu Jintao and former President Jiang Zemin for his distinguished service and achievements, and has received several honors and awards including the National Torch Program Software Industrial Base Advanced Individual Award, National Labor Award, the Shanghai Technology Innovation Leader Top Ten Award, the Development and Construction of Pudong Special Contribution Award, and Shanghai Model Workers Award.
Before returning to China in 1996 to expand the Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, Professor Hu served as the General Consul of the Chinese Consulate in New York, and was later appointed as Director of the China Group Science Division of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Professor Hu graduated from the esteemed University of Science and Technology of China, Department of Technical Physics. He directed various university and national science laboratories. As a scholar, Professor Hu has been received as a visiting scientist at many world renowned research centers including the West Berlin BESSY synchrotron radiation laboratory, the Hamburg DESY research center for surface science, the California Institute of Technology, and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where he served as the Director of the Surface Science Laboratory.
