Specialized High-Performance Analog Components Solve Critical System Design Challenges as Accelerating Enterprise Data Rates Stress Signal Integrity across Backplane and Cabling Media
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — April 22, 2010 — Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MSPD), a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for enterprise infrastructure applications, today announced the immediate availability of the Amplif-Eye™ line of signal conditioners designed specifically for enterprise storage, computing and networking applications.
Mindspeed’s new enterprise initiative targets the growing market for products that enable servers and storage equipment to fully and more easily implement the latest high-data-rate standards including PCI Express, SATA/SAS, RXAUI, Fiber Channel and Ethernet. Until now, optimal performance in these systems was difficult to achieve because signal integrity could not be maintained across the systems’ backplanes and cabling media. Mindspeed’s products address these problems by correcting for insertion loss, crosstalk, reflections due to impedance mismatches and other channel impairments associated with implementing multi-gigabit signaling between line cards and across their backplanes.
The signal-integrity problem has been magnified as enterprise data rates have doubled over the past few years to 5 gigabits per second (Gbps) for the most common server protocol, PCI Express, and 6Gbps for the most common enterprise-storage protocol, SAS. Signal conditioners resolve these problems in two general categories: Re-driving signal conditioners, which use transmit and receive equalization to correct for insertion loss, and re-timing signal conditioners, which add a Clock Data Recovery (CDR) circuit to address issues caused by crosstalk and reflections.
Mindspeed®’s Amplif-Eye enterprise signal-conditioning product line initially includes six re-driving and re-timing devices, with five other products scheduled to be added later this year. Each device is specifically designed to accommodate SAS, PCI Express, Interlaken and RXAUI protocols. Products in the family are fabricated in low-power CMOS technology to maintain the lowest possible power profile while maintaining best-in-class performance to assist system designers in the difficult task of migrating to the higher data rates.
“Mindspeed’s high-speed cable driver was the only part we found that could easily adapt to different cable lengths,” said Trung Tran, lead design engineer with Extreme Networks. “In an evaluation of ten vendors, Mindspeed stood far in front of the field in flexibility, cost, and performance. It is easily the best choice for re-drivers at 5Gbps.”
“We’re very excited to be working with dynamic enterprise market leaders such as Extreme Networks,” said Kurt Busch, senior vice president and general manager for Mindspeed’s high performance analog business unit. “Mindspeed is meeting the demanding design challenges of today’s OEM innovators by providing the enabling technology along with the necessary support needed to build products that operate at increasingly higher speeds.”
Mindspeed’s signal conditioning product line includes four re-driving devices and two re-timing devices. The two-channel M21450, four-channel M21451, eight-channel M21452, and 12-channel M21453 re-driving devices support data rates up to 6.5 Gbps. The eight-channel M21362 and 12-channel M21363 re-timing devices support data rates up to 5.5 Gbps. All products feature Mindspeed’s advanced equalization technology, which boosts input signals up to 35 dB at 3.25 GHz. The devices also feature fully non-blocking crosspoint switch cores that enable loopbacks, multi-cast and broadcast features, among others.
All Mindspeed signal-conditioning devices for enterprise applications are in full production and available for volume shipments now.
Mindspeed’s high-performance analog products for communication, server and storage products will be on display at Computex Taipei at the TWTC Exhibition Hall in Booth 1200 (Area H - 2nd Floor Hall 1), June 1 through June 5, 2010 in Taipei, Taiwan.
