Alphion Corporation Announces 7-Pin SOA Package

New Semiconductor Optical Amplifier package addresses small factor applications

PRINCETON JUNCTION, N.J. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — March 24, 2010 — Alphion® Corporation, a privately held company that develops, manufactures and markets communication systems, sub-systems, and integrated photonic components based on its proprietary QLight® technology, today announced the introduction of a new 7-pin Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) packaging solution.

The new package specifically targets applications such as transceivers and transponders, where space is at a premium. The package shares the same proven assembly technology and thermal properties as the 14 pin MSA butterfly package. By reducing pin count and moving the pins to one side of the package, significant space is saved. The new 7-pin SOA also offers placement flexibility as it can be mounted against the side of transponder or transceiver housing. The new package is available with tight bend radius fiber. This, combined with the shorter feed-through tubes, greatly reduces the overall length of the amplifier.

“The development of the 7-pin package demonstrates Alphion’s continued commitment to the SOA market,” noted Chris Peterson, Vice President of Marketing, “and enables SOAs to be used in applications where space is at a premium.”

Alphion offers a broad range of SOAs supporting wavelengths from 1000 nm to 1600 nm, with gain options from 5 to 30 dB. Other parameters can be optimized to meet customers’ specific application needs. Alphion will be displaying its full line of SOAs and GPON network access solutions at the 2010 OFC/NFOEC exposition (booth 2142), March 23rd to 25th, in San Diego.

Alphion Corporation develops, manufactures and markets communications systems, subsystems, integrated and discrete photonic components based on its proprietary QLight® technology platform. Alphion products are sold world wide to service providers and OEMs in the Fiber-to-the-Premises ( FTTP), telecommunications, CATV, fiber optic sensing, test & measurement, medical imaging, and defense system markets. Alphion offers a growing line of broadband access products, which support complete end-to-end GPON network solutions. The AOLT-4000 Optical Line Terminal, AONT-100/200/300 Optical Network Terminal family, and Passive Optical Splitter family are in full compliance with the International Telecommunications Union’s standard for GPON equipment (ITU-T G.984). This ensures that the Alphion product family meets the stringent carrier-class requirements and interoperates with a broad spectrum of other manufacturers’ GPON equipment. Alphion is member of both FSAN ( - a consortium of carriers and equipment suppliers developing tomorrow’s broadband network standards and the ITU ( For more information about Alphion and its products, visit our website
