Ruling Issued on Magma's Motion to Dismiss; Synopsys' Fraud Allegations "Fail to Meet the Pleading Requirements"

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—May 18, 2005— Magma(R) Design Automation Inc. (Nasdaq: LAVA), a provider of semiconductor design software, announced today that the U.S. District Court granted in part Magma's motion to dismiss certain claims brought by Synopsys in the companies' patent litigation. Among the court's rulings are that Synopsys' fraud allegations "fail to meet the pleading requirements" of the federal rules. Magma may still show that the statutes of limitations have run out based on the actual evidence.

"We are pleased with today's ruling, given the high hurdle for motions to dismiss," said David Stanley, Magma special counsel. "The court decides motions to dismiss based only on allegations in the pleadings and not on evidence presented. We hope to prevail on these issues when the court hears all the evidence, as a filing for summary judgment will make available to us.

"It is important to realize that this is merely one salvo in an ongoing legal battle," Stanley added.

The court's order and other documents relevant to this matter are available on the Magma website at
