VaST Founder and CEO, Graham Hellestrand, Elected IEEE Fellow

SAN DIEGO, California, June 8, 2004 - VaST Systems Technology, known for its fast and accurate system-level tools and simulation models for virtual prototyping, today announced that Dr. Graham Hellestrand, the company's founder and CEO, has been elected a Fellow by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Board of Directors. IEEE Fellow presentations were made at the Design Automation Conference. Dr. Hellestrand was recognized for his contributions to computer system architecture simulations.

The IEEE confers the grade of Fellow on engineers whose exceptional achievements and contributions have made a lasting impact on technology, society and the engineering profession. "Graham certainly meets these criteria," said Dr. Michael Lightner, vice president of IEEE publications, and Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Colorado at Boulder. "His combination of vision, technical expertise, and business acumen has led to significant accomplishments in EDA tools for complex systems. Graham's accomplishments have taken place both within the walls of academia, in his role as full Professor at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, as well as in the highly competitive EDA business environment, as the CEO of VaST Systems Technology, a rising company in electronic systems design."

Dr. Hellestrand has more than 30 years of experience in electronic systems engineering and is the principal author of two U. S. patents that form the basis of VaST products. VaST Systems Technology is the third high tech company that Graham has founded.

Under Dr. Hellestrand's leadership, VaST is establishing a standard process for electronic system design (ESL). The company's tools are used to architect high performance, timing-accurate virtual system prototypes that enable the exploration and accurate assessment of the effect of architectural choices, the development of software, and the design of hardware. These virtual electronic systems are used to develop and verify the architecture, hardware and software of multi-processor wireless systems, consumer electronic devices and networked electronic control systems for automobiles. VaST's unique processor, bus and device modeling technologies enable speeds of 20-200 MIPS in highly accurate software-only versions of complex systems.

After 25 years (1973-1998) as an academic staff member at University of New South Wales (UNSW), Dr. Hellestrand was elected Emeritus Professor of computer science and engineering in December 2002. During his tenure at UNSW, he was the founder, and from 1979-1998 the director, of the VLSI and Systems Technology (VaST) Laboratory. From 1989-1996, Dr. Hellestrand founded and managed the multi-disciplinary computer engineering undergraduate program at UNSW - one of the first to meld software, hardware and management disciplines into a four-year professional course. During this period, he published more than 100 refereed papers in international conferences and journals. Dr. Hellestrand has been active in the IEEE as board member and vice president, Asia-Pacific, of the Circuits and Systems Society of the IEEE; general co-chair of the 2001 International Symposium on Circuits and Systems; and General Chair of the first Asia Pacific Conference on Circuits and Systems (APCCAS) in 1992.

Dr. Hellestrand holds BSc and PhD degrees in computer science and electrical engineering from UNSW, and MBA and MBA (Exec) degrees from The Australian Graduate School of Management and the University of Sydney. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia, and is a certified professional engineer.

The IEEE is a non-profit, technical professional association of more than 360,000 individual members in approximately 175 countries. Through its members, the IEEE is a leading authority in technical areas ranging from computer engineering, biomedical technology and telecommunications, to electric power, aerospace and consumer electronics, among others.
