This year, more than ever, DAC is more about who WILL BE THERE, than who won’t…and who truly supports the EDA community. Many are talking about how Cadence abandoned DAC…

I think that we should all focus and make it about who is showing…

DAC, 45 years strong, 45 years bringing the industry together to meet, greet, showcase ideas, and propagate innovation. Tens of Thousands have attended lively keynotes, panel discussions, tutorials, and vendor demos. Trade show success is rarely measured by absolute tangible results, but more by how many hands were shaken, contacts made, and ideas created. (And how many contest prizes were won, never forget that).

More important DAC has always been about OPPORTUNITY, AND BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS! This year when you walk the halls of DAC, look at all the friends, look at all the smiles, look at all the brilliant people assembled, many for so many years. Most important, look at how many new booths there will be…listen to the buzz on what technology seems to be getting hotter…find out what start-ups are emerging as real and viable companies. THAT’S WHAT MAKES DAC SO IMPORTANT TO ALL OF US. And that is why all of us should attend, support, and continue to strengthen this very important convention. EDA (and all the peripheral business) is still very strong and vibrant. Companies are desperately constantly calling me in need of new hires to help them achieve their innovative growth goals . Finding the right candidate is still the biggest challenge for virtually all the start-ups. Jobs are out there, good jobs, and I never leave DAC with less that 15 or so new reqs, and I expect no less this DAC.

I can never understand why people always try to kill something at the first mention of something negative. Last column I addressed how wonderful it is that companies that have not acquired EDA companies are now looking at the viability of doing so. And hopefully more and more EDA companies will join together to meet the challenges of the giants, because so many of the start-ups have really great product. So many start-ups are running their business profitably using the right business models and management. Most significant, there are more and more vehicles for a viable exit strategy, and that is really exciting.

Bottom line, jobs are still plentiful, hiring is robust. Like always, it just depends for both companies and candidates, that the right search is open when the right candidate is looking. It is and has always been about timing. EDA continues to grow while so much of the economy is not, and has proven time and time again of its strength. EDA is not a giant industry, but give me a niche industry that continues to prove itself successful for as many years as DAC has been around, and I will show you people making money every time.

    this is a ridiculus way of a recruiter getting business by trying to pose as an industry analyst, and it makes a joke of any real analysts who truly understand the industry

    Thanks for those minimalizing, marginalizing comments. Everyday, 10 hours a day, all I (recruiters) do is talk to EDA engineers, sales, marketing, and corporate EDA INDUSTRY executives about EDA. I/we listen to their concerns and discuss issues. Certainly they are not DEEP TECHNICAL issues, (more I should say, as deep as most recruiters need to go) none the less, relevant to how EDA is doing, heading, performing, and we probably talk, listen, to more that any one out there.
    I have total respect for the incredible analyst’s. I read them and in fact have pointed to them in previous articles. The fact is, I doubt a single one of them talks to as many diverse segments of our business as I/we do...and I say our business because the recruiters that specialize in this microcosm we call EDA live, breathe, and know it as well as most. Correct, we are not the technical elite that drive and thoroughly get the vision of the future; I would never suggest that, or anything near. We might not be able to design a chip, or develop a tool, but we know or can find the people the EDA companies need to accomplish that. That is why I never comment on the technical component, that’s for the analysts to do.
    So I ask…doesn’t that give me the insight to state my opinion? It is insulting to for anyone to diminish the incredibly important role that recruiters play in this industry, and to say that is offensive and elitists.
    As a professional EDA recruiter, that works tirelessly in only EDA to find the needles in the haystack, we have the absolute right to love it, comment on it, as well as do all we can to be part of sustaining it.
    Thousands read my column every month. I know clearly from what I hear, how important it is to offer advice and opinions about our industry to the many engineers that do not know past what they do day to day, as well as the ones that really do. I love what I do, and will continue to do so.

    Having attended 22 of the last 23 DAC's, I completely agree with Mark - DAC is more about meeting with your compadres and actually hearing about the next-great company. We all place our bets (needing a Vegas DAC soon) with our careers on the company that we feel stands the best chance. Most of that data-gathering happens at DAC - whether you are searching for your next project saving tool or career-advancing move.
    So pity the Cadence minions - they will be missed for their endless expense accounts and lavish parties. All the better for the smaller companies in this space. Maybe we can leverage our HUGE investment in DAC to a smaller contengient of decision-making technical managers to better deliver our message without the added noise of a CDN amplified marketing preso filling the convention floor with swag-seeking attendees.

    I'm an FAE in EDA, and have known Mark for many years. Obviously his presence on EDACafe is a way for him to increase his visibility. I don't see a problem with this - recruiters definitely have a role in EDA, both for the candidates as well as the companies.
    Mark's article represents his view of DAC as a professional recruiter. He knows who's hiring and who's not. Of course he views DAC a as place to meet people and build relationships. What's the problem with that?
