TI Enhances DTV Audio Performance with New Generation of Efficient Stereo Class-D Audio Power Amplifiers

Device Designed to Speed Customers' Time-to-Market

DALLAS, Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE: TXN) (TI) today introduced two new stereo Class-D audio power amplifiers for digital televisions (DTV). The devices feature highly efficient Class-D operation and industry-leading audio performance, including pop/click- minimizing circuitry, low total harmonic distortion and excellent signal-to- noise ratio. The amplifiers' easy-to-use layout and low electromagnetic interference (EMI) speed the design cycle for manufacturers of medium- and large-screen DTVs including DLP(R) HDTV, liquid crystal display (LCD) and plasma. The TPA3100D2 drives up to 20 watts (W) per channel of continuous stereo output power with no external heat sink and is typically used in 27-inch and larger DTVs with the audio fidelity and form factors consumers demand. The TPA3101D2 is a pin-for-pin version with 10 W per channel output power that targets DTVs smaller than 27 inches. Both devices can drive a nominal load down to 4 ohms.

The TPA310xD2 devices provide excellent performance while reducing the number of external components required, which cuts overall system cost and allows for a sleeker end product. For instance, the TPA3100D2 is 92 percent efficient when driving 8-ohm speakers, eliminating the need for an external heat sink. The TPA310xD2 devices feature wide supply voltage operation from 10 volts (V) to 26 V, simplifying power supply requirements and making operation from the LCD backlight voltage possible. Thermal and short circuit protection with an auto recovery option ensures excellent reliability and robust operation.

The two amplifiers make the design process simpler and faster so designers can focus on differentiating their products and speeding time-to-market. For example, the devices are pin-for-pin compatible, allowing TV designers using the TPA3101D2 to easily upgrade their systems to the 20-W output power of the TPA3100D2 without investing more engineering time. And each device's pinout has been optimized to reduce EMI and provide for easy layout. In addition, reference layouts have been tested and passed the EMI requirements of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Part 15 Class B and Conformite Europeenne (CE) CISPR 22 regulations.

The TPA310xD2 devices join TI's complete offering of high-performance analog and digital signal processor (DSP) products for home entertainment audio, including audio data converters such as the PCM1850 muxed-input, stereo audio analog-to-digital converter, the Aureus(TM) platform of audio DSPs, Class-D and PurePath Digital(TM) audio amplifiers, and audio clocks such as the CDCE906. Pricing and Availability

The TPA3100D2 and TPA3101D2 Class-D audio power amplifiers are available now in a 7 mm x 7 mm 48-pin quad flat no-lead (QFN) package from TI and its authorized distributors. The device will also be available soon in a 48-pin thin quad flat package (TQFP). Suggested resale pricing in quantities of 1,000 is $3.50 for the TPA3100D2 and $3.10 for the TPA3101D2. Samples and EVMs are available for 24-hour delivery.
