TI expands sensing portfolio with Hall effect magnetic sensors

Easy-to-use reference designs simplify industrial motor applications

DALLAS, May 19, 2014 — (PRNewswire) —  Texas Instruments (TI) (NASDAQ: TXN) today strengthened its motor solutions and sensing portfolio with the addition of a new family of Hall effect magnetic sensors designed for use in industrial applications ranging from position detection to motor control. The rugged and fully protected DRV5000 sensor products include digital latch, digital switch and analog bipolar output options for such diverse applications as brushless DC (BLDC) motor control, home security, industrial valve and damper position sensors, speed and position control loops, and flow meters. The rugged and fully protected DRV5000 sensor products include digital latch, digital switch and analog bipolar output options for such diverse applications as brushless DC (BLDC) motor control, home security, industrial valve and damper position sensors, speed and position control loops, and flow meters.

The DRV5000 Hall effect sensor family joins TI's growing sensing portfolio, which includes the industry's first inductance-to-digital converter, as well as sensor and signal conditioning solutions for temperature, current, pressure, occupancy, optical sensing and others.

Features and benefits of DRV5000 family:

  • Supports a wide range of applications: Family of chopper-stabilized devices, including digital latch, digital switch and analog bipolar output options, support applications from 2.5 V to 38 V.    
  • Highly reliable: All devices include reverse supply protection up to -22 V and the ability to withstand transient voltages up to 40 V.
  • Can be used in existing designs: 3-pin devices offered in two industry-standard packages are compatible with existing design architectures.
  • Temperature stability: Can support -40 C up to 125 C with minimal change in magnetic sensitivity over temperature.

In addition to the new Hall effect sensor family, TI introduced two new reference designs in the TI Designs library to simplify and speed motor drive board design. Both designs feature the DRV5013 Hall effect sensor, the new DRV8307 or DRV8308 BLDC motor gate driver, and three CSD88537ND 60-V dual NexFET™ power MOSFETs, along with other required circuits, to help engineers jump-start their designs and even eliminate the microcontroller in cases where control is not required.

  • 12-V and 24-V Brushless DC Outrunner Motor reference design: Using the DRV8307 BLDC controller, gate driver and drive electronics, this 6-cm motor is ready to drop in and spin. The design supports 8.5 V to 32 V and 5.2 A, and can be easily modified to support specific system requirements.
  • Speed-Controlled 24- V Brushless DC Outrunner Motor reference design: The DRV8308 BLDC controller, gate driver with closed-loop speed control maintains accurate revolutions per minute across the entire motion profile. No microcontroller or firmware is used, and the intelligent sinusoidal current drive minimizes acoustic noise and torque ripple to maximize motor performance

Pricing and availability
The DRV5000 family is available to sample in industry-standard SOT-23, 3-pin surface mount and TO-92S, 3-pin through hole package options. The highest sensitivity digital latch device (DRV5013) is in production today.
