The EDAA Lifetime Achievement Award 2012 goes to Alberto L. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli

 Kaiserslautern, Germany, January 3, 2012 – The EDAA Lifetime Achievement Award 2012 goes to Alberto L. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to individuals who made outstanding contributions to the state of the art in electronic design, automation and testing of electronic systems in their life. In order to be eligible, candidates must have made innovative contributions which had an impact on the way electronic systems are being designed.

Past recipients have been Kurt ANTREICH (2003), Hugo DE MAN (2004), Jochen JESS (2005), Robert BRAYTON (2006), Tom W. WILLIAMS (2007), Ernest S. KUH (2008), Jan M. RABAEY (2009), Daniel D. GAJSKI (2010) and Melvin A. BREUER (2011).

The Award will be presented at the plenary session of the 2012 DATE Conference, to be held 12-16 March in Dresden, Germany.

Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli holds the Edgar L. and Harold H. Buttner Chair of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California at Berkeley. He has been on the Faculty since 1976. He obtained an electrical engineering and computer science degree ("Dottore in Ingegneria") summa cum laude from the Politecnico di Milano, Milano, Italy in 1971. He was a co-founder of Cadence and Synopsys, the two leading companies in the area of Electronic Design Automation. He is the Chief Technology Adviser of Cadence. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Cadence, Sonics, and Accent, an ST Microelectronics-Cadence joint venture he helped founding. He was a member of the HP Strategic Technology Advisory Board, and is a member of the Science and Technology Advisory Board of General Motors, of the UTC Technology Advisory Council and of the Scientific Council of the Tronchetti Provera foundation and of the Snaidero Foundation to name but a few of his numerous board and consultant activities. He is an author of over 850 papers, 15 books and 3 patents in the area of design tools and methodologies, large-scale systems, embedded systems, hybrid systems and innovation. He has been a Fellow of the IEEE since 1982 and a Member of the National Academy of Engineering, the highest honour bestowed upon a US engineer, since 1998.

Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli is an outstanding researcher, educator and industrial pioneer who has largely driven advances in EDA and played a major role in EDA industry. He has developed theories and software tool prototypes in academia and has actively contributed to the technology transfer of research ideas to industry and to the development of production-level EDA tools for commercial and internal use purposes. His pioneering work has spanned a surprisingly wide spectrum of different EDA areas, including circuit simulation and optimization, logic synthesis, layout, verification, analog design and system-level design. He has championed the notions of communication-based design, separation of concerns and platform based design perhaps one of the most widely adopted ideas in system design today.
