Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes were introduced by Gallager in 1962 as an error correcting code. LDPC allows transmission at rates close to Shannon’s limit, but the lack of powerful processors at the time of invention made them inapplicable for decades. The LDPC encoder is a very regular algorithm and suited well for parallelization on a PACT XPP processor.
