Now that package designers must face gigabit signaling rates through packages, there is a greater need for alternatives to lumped element modeling. Unfortunately, tradeoffs between using W-element models and distributed models are not always obvious. This short paper addresses some of those tradeoffs and looks at a specific example where we extend the bandwidth of an existing PakSi-E package model by adopting a multi-segment approach.
