Although new tools, improved methodologies and higher levels of abstraction are
shortening design and verification times, the time required to get from first silicon to
volume production is growing. Also growing is the difficulty associated with determining
the root cause of problems found in regression simulation, emulation and with FPGA
prototypes. The size, complexity and increased software content of today’s System-on-
Chip (SoC) designs are making it harder to validate and debug silicon prototypes, bring
up test programs and complete all the tasks required for volume production of quality
devices.
