This paper is an attempt to throw light on the Android framework in general, and the Android-BSP integration layer in specific. The major focus is on analyzing the customizations introduced by Android into a conventional Linux system; thereby, enabling the BSP integrator to bring-up Android on hardware platforms in a short span of time. Another
objective is to bring out more clarity on the Android specific modifications in the Linux kernel and the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL).
In a nutshell, this paper attempts to answer the question ‘‘What does Android expect’’ by highlighting the key differences between a legacy Linux implementation and Android.
