Library vendors provide general guidelines for using their intellectual property (IP) in a wide range of applications. By examining design libraries in more detail, one can tailor the implementation techniques to improve efficiency. Understanding the capabilities of todays low power offerings is a greater challenge than in previous generations since low power libraries are provided in multiple Vts and characterized in multiple voltage domains. This paper provides guidelines and a methodology for evaluating libraries used in mixed-Vt flows. Using this approach, we developed a mixed-Vt methodology to reduce leakage power in our application by 50% versus an industry-standard mixed-Vt flow.
