Boeing's PCI-based Generic Processing Engine (GPE) design requirements were such that in order to fit to as many markets as possible, the GPE had to support Windows Linux and Solaris operating systems. Boeing engineers sought out a robust development tool that would enable quick and easy development of cross platform hardware access code, without requiring preliminary kernel knowledge.
