At bit rates above one Gb/s, the effects of board discontinuities on the integrity of the signals cannot be ignored. For an accurate design, the effects of parasitic, packaging, board materials and trace geometries must be characterized and quantified. An essential step in this process of characterization is the measurement of the properties of the board in terms of S-parameters, input impedance, noise voltage, etc.
