Automatic identification systems are a mandatory fit to commercial ships. This provides the mariner with an indication of all the other similarly equipped vessels within his immediate area, giving them vital awareness of the conditions that may affect the navigation and safety of this vessel. In a similar manner, coastguard and harbour authorities can monitor the AIS transmissions from their land-based sites.
