Mainstream digital signal processor architectures have undergone radical changes over the last five years. Where once all DSP architectures were quite similar, now there are a wide range of architectural approaches: VLIW, SIMD, and DSP enhanced general-purpose processors, to name but a few. This white paper explores some of the key developments that have shaped current DSP architectures and looks at the some of the creative new approaches processor architects are taking to create faster, more economical, more energy-efficient DSPs.
