The drive toward better total quality management (TQM)is gaining momentum in many high-tech industries, from software to hardware development and beyond. In fact, TQM is likely to become a key competitive differentiator in arenas such as embedded software, just as quality management transformed the automobile industry back in the 1980’s, giving Japanese manufacturers a decided leg up on American automakers. To date, TQM programs at most companies still rely on manual, paper-based methods. However, as we will argue here, new automated tools have an essential role to play. Automation is not simply an enhancement--a way of speeding up process management tasks that would otherwise be carried out by other means--but a key to achieving stringent and consistent process controls. The paper considers the importance of automation and describes the necessary attributes of such tools. Click here for your copy of the white paper
