In recent years, assertion-based verification (ABV) has emerged as a critical addition to the design verification toolbox. As a growing number of companies are discovering, ABV can be a vital safety net, providing accurate and early identification of design bugs that escape detection by other methods such as simulation. As SoCs and other chips become more complex, simulation coverage is hard-pressed to keep up, and ABV is helping to fill the gap. The right ABV tools, appropriately applied, can make the difference between costly re-designs and re-spins, on the one hand, and rapid, working silicon on the other. This paper will provide a brief introduction to assertion-based verification and its benefits, and describe some important capabilities to look for in ABV tools.
