DAC 2013: Three marvelous awards in Austin

April 24th, 2013 by Peggy Aycinena

If you’ve been on the fence about coming to the Design Automation Conference in June, hesitate no longer. There will be wonderful things to see there, and marvelous accomplishments to celebrate. At least three awards set to be presented in Austin will go to individuals who have contributed significantly to innovations and energies in the industry, each award being given in the name of a noted role model whose own contributions have pushed the envelope of the industry forward.

The Phil Kaufman Award will be presented at DAC’s kick-off social event, this year taking place in the Austin Convention Center at 5:30 pm on Sunday evening, June 2nd, in Ballroom ABC. The 2013 recipient is U.C. Berkeley’s Dr. Chenming Hu, father of the finFET and major contributor to the understanding of device reliability and modeling.

Next, the Marie R. Pisitlli Award will be presented on Monday afternoon, June 3rd, at 2:30 pm in the Exhibit Hall Pavilion Theater. The 2013 recipient is the widely admired EDA public relations expert Nanette Collins. Collins has represented more than 30 different EDA companies over the course of her distinguished career, and in that process set a standard for excellence and professionalism which carried over into her many years of work as Press Liaison for DAC.

Finally, the Richard Newton Design Automation Conference Award will presented on Tuesday morning in Austin, June 4th, during the morning plenary session. The scholarship has been revamped this year to include more than one recipient and now extends to multiple students in the form of travel grants to attend DAC. Previously, the grant helped support graduate research into electronic design automation and was awarded to a single faculty member leading developments in this area. The 2013 Richard Newton Award winners will be honored in June.

It’s less than 40 days until the Design Automation Conference begins in Austin. There are many reasons to be coming to the conference this year, its 50th annual. Witnessing the presentation of the three awards listed above certainly ranks among the most important.
