25 years ago (1988) ECAD and SDA Systems merged to form Cadence Design Systems. At U.C. Berkeley Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli played key roles in the formation of ECAD, SDA Systems, and Cadence, and in this video he explains how Cadence was started.

Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli explains how Cadence was different from other large EDA providers in the late 1980s, and reviews some key Cadence contributions during the past 25 years.

Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli takes EDA in directions you wouldn’t have thought of — cyber-physical systems, synthetic biology and brain-machine interfaces.

The “Internet of Things” doesn’t go quite far enough for Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli, who envisions a “sensory swarm” into which smartphones and laptops will eventually disappear.
