An Evening on Patents

October 6th, 2015 by Bob Smith, Executive Director

EDAC_EDAC Connected Logo_December 2015Talking about patents at a cocktail party is no way to make friends and a near-perfect way to clear    the room!

Nonetheless, the EDA Consortium is about to take that risk as we kick off our new Legal Series with a panel, “Patents and Patent Litigation –– Develop, Strengthen, and Protect Your Intellectual Property.”

Please join us Thursday evening, October 29, for an informative exchange. Come meet San Jose’s Mayor Sam Liccardo, who will offer opening remarks, and Trademark Office and John Cabeca, newly named director of the Silicon Valley United States Patent and Trademark Office. The event will start at 6 p.m. with networking and refreshments at the EDA Consortium/SEMI Global Headquarters in San Jose, Calif.

Patents, an important part of every EDA and IP companies’ assets, protect inventions and innovations and may define the company’s value, investments and technology. Moderated by Salumeh Loesch, an associate with Klarquist Sparkman, panelists will discuss how to protect this innovation and invention through patent procurement and enforcement. They will address how to get highly technical patents through the Patent Office, and offer ways to protect patents or potential inventions in the current legal landscape. Finally, they will offer ways to prepare against potential patent litigation.

Panelists include:

  • John Cabeca. As the director of the Silicon Valley United States Patent and Trademark Office, he ensures the USPTO’s initiatives and programs are tailored to Silicon Valley’s unique ecosystem of industries and stakeholders. He will provide insights on how to prosecute patents in complex technologies, provide guidance for smaller, emerging companies, and explain what the new Silicon Valley satellite office has to offer the EDA industry.
  • Karna Nisewaner, associate general counsel for Intellectual Property at Cadence Design Systems, will examine the role patents and patent litigation play in the EDA industry. She will suggest ways to educate and re-educate inventors with new patent laws and strategies, and identify the obstacles tech companies may have in recognizing potential inventions and turning them into patents.
  • Robert Sachs, partner with Fenwick & West, will talk about recent developments in patent eligibility and related patentability issues and the potential impact on EDA.
  • John Vandenberg, partner at Klarquist Sparkman, will assess the value of patents, enforcing patents in court, and defending issued patents before the Patent Office and in court.

We hope you will attend and come armed with questions. The evening is open to all EDAC member companies free of charge. Non-EDAC members are welcome to attend based on space availability. To register, go to: http://conta.cc/1JyX0O3

We have Steve Pollock, the tireless chair of EDAC’s Emerging Companies Committee, to thank for organizing this panel, the first in a series on legal issues. Thanks, too, to its other sponsors Klarquist Sparkman and Mod Marketing.

This event will be followed two weeks later by the 2015 Phil Kaufman Award Presentation and Dinner, sponsored by EDAC and the IEEE Counsel on EDA, honoring Dr. Walden C. Rhines of Mentor Graphics. The dinner will be held Thursday, November 12, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at 4th Street Summit Center in San Jose, Calif. I’ll have more details in my next blog post. Meanwhile, visit the EDAC website to register: http://bit.ly/1OONdLI
