WOW, DAC Was Better Than I Thought…BIZ Has Picked Up Since DAC….The Amazing “Peggy” Wrote About Yours Truly…

Thursday, July 7th, 2016

Let me start by thanking Peggy Aycinena for her article.

It was nice to have the tables turned on me by one of our brightest; take a look… http://www10.edacafe.com/blogs/whatwouldjoedo/2016/06/30/mark-gilbert-white-coat-white-hat-big-fish/

Heading to DAC this year in Austin, I was prepared for a snooze fest, as the general consensus from most folks I talked to was that they were not expecting all that much this time around.  Well to the contrary, DAC was quite interesting this year and by quite interesting I mean “quite interesting for DAC”.

I am constantly asked; “SO, did you see anything interesting or exciting”? How do you answer that?  Is anything at DAC really interesting or exciting?  Well perhaps for the select few ultra brainiacs (of which we have a ton) that get off on EDA and find it exciting and kind of umm interesting, it was umm DAC!  Perhaps I could have said, “Wow, XYZ company simulator is x times faster”? That is certainly “exciting”! Or maybe, “ABC Design can verify a design in x less time”? Wow, talk about interesting! How bout, “Power at RTL is so much less with the new GHI tool”? I mean, that is BOTH interesting and exciting!

Landing The Interview Is About More Than Your Technical Skills…Must Read Advice For Anyone Interviewing

Friday, April 15th, 2016

I have placed more candidates than I can count and have additionally prepared more candidates for their interviews, than I have yelled at my kids… (OK I admit to stretching there a bit).  I cannot begin to tell you how many candidates make the most elementary mistakes during their first interview(s), serving to eliminate themselves before they have even had a chance to prove their worthiness.  It is certainly great to possess the needed technical skills for the position but it is even greater to know how to showcase those skills, to give you the best shot at acing the interview.

Here are a few of my more basic tips and what I always tell my candidates before they interview. I explain to them that the simplest, most logical goal is to have one single objective…and that is to get through the 1st interview successfully. Since most first interviews are phone screens, the discussions can vary depending on the company and the person doing the interviewing.

Austin Was An Amazing DAC…EDA Is Heading Toward Another Strong Year & So Is Hiring…Our NEW EDA Recruiting Software Is Up And Running…

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

My moniker White Jacket and I spent three days, morning to night, working DAC. (Check out my new DAC video… http://www10.edacafe.com/video/EDA-Careers-Mark-Gilbert-President/39972/media.html).  The show was enjoyably close to my hotel (a few scant steps…closest I have ever stayed to a center) and the show itself was remarkably easy to navigate. I was pleasantly gratified that how I reported DAC would be, was pretty much how DAC was.  Overall, I would say the conference was not bad in the least and I dare say for most, pretty spectacular.  DAC is a sort-of stomping ground for adult engineers and Austin (a “weird” stomping ground on its own) allowed a lot of us to do some serious stomping after the engineering talk stopped.

What Are THEY Saying About DAC Austin…Is Hiring As Strong In 2013…My White Jacket Is Being Pressed for DAC!

Saturday, May 11th, 2013

DAC is being held out of California…sounds like a “hear all about it” headline.  The actuality is that DAC, out of California, is not an anomaly; DAC has left California before.  I can remember the sweltering heat of summer in Vegas and the parties all around the French Quarter of New Orleans to mention a few.  Austin has waited patiently for us so now it is your turn to shine. After all, Austin is probably the second largest hub of tech business in the country.  DAC is doing a great job setting the stage for the High Tech conference by making absolutely sure that the smartest brains in the world know that Austin is a great place to party.

Yes, there is good reason to go to Austin beyond the music and parties.  It is a smart move on the part of the DAC management to show there…most folks that I talk to are indeed going.  I have never been to Austin, and I dare say might never have gone, as this would not have been my first choice as a vacation destination.  The fact that it looks like a heck of a town makes this an intriguing location and I can dare say, a nice refreshing change. Local Austin engineers that have not had the fortune to go to DAC in California will now have the opportunity, as it sits in their backyard.  The DAC Company roster is not noticeably missing anyone and in fact has a fair amount of new exhibitors.  We already know that we will never see the DAC exhibit floor anywhere near its past size but it is not size that matters; it is the amount of exhibitors and all of you that decide to attend. After all, it is the support of the community that makes for a great show. The customers that exhibitors want to see will all be there, and on that you can wager.  I have not heard anyone say to me, “Mark, XYZ is not going to attend because it is in Austin”.

OBAMA!…How was DAC this Year…The ABSOLUTE DO’S and DON’TS of INTERVIEWING…Next, MY Exclusive with Aart De Geus…

Monday, June 11th, 2012

I had to add this after seeing the posting from my bud/guru Dan Nenni on Obama, since I think my story is way better.  As we depart the gate at SFO, they tell us we are pulling over to the side to “wait” because of weather in Dallas, (I knew I should have done as I usually do…gone through LAX and wrote this at  Chili’s).  An hour later, the Pilot announces Obama’s Air Force One has everything shut down for his departure from SFO. Just then, cool as can be, right out my window rolls POTUS.  I look on in amazement as AF1approaches the runway and suddenly jumped and said “ S#*^…..I have to get this on camera”…. way too loudly, I might add.  Since phones were on because we were sitting in a holding pattern, I fumbled for my phone and scrambled to film this once in a lifetime video.  By now AF-I with it’s entourage has turned from the taxi-way onto the active runway.  I have seconds…the icons on my phone seem so miniature…AF-1 starts rolling.  I hit the camera icon…the camera opens, I point and shoot…and all I get is an empty runway…nothing, nada, missed it all.  You don’t want to know the next words I yelled…First class asked me to please act accordingly  ;)

So I figured I would alleviate a few hours worth of answering the same question by writing what everyone will ask me in the coming weeks… “How was DAC”?  Now I can simply say, “read my darn column”.
