New Company/Candidate Recruiting Software Changes Everything…Seems Like More Parties @ DAC @ Everybody’s Coming…

This is a story about exactly why EDA changes everything (albeit down the line) and how software continues to permeate every corner of our business and professional life. I remember when I was first drafted into EDA as a recruiter. The infamous and back then well known Bob Gold said enough with deciding, debating what your next venture is going to be…it is time for you to get back in the game and I have the perfect opportunity for you. Famous last words they were.
I had just left a considerable web development company in 96-97 where I was the VP of Marketing. This thing called the Internet was exploding and we were waiting on 150 million dollars in funding, as we were one of the hottest development companies in the country. Problem was, we waited and waited and grew and grew in anticipation and when the money did not come, well that ended that. Fortunately I had a few successes in Sales and Marketing in my life and wanted the next opportunity to be the right one. When Bob said let’s do this, I will make you a partner, I decided to give it a shot as I knew I could make a significant contribution. I understood IT and had developed software before, so I thought this could work. I had no clue how complex EDA was and how much learning was awaiting me. Never did I think I would be the “go to recruiter” for EDA, one of the most complex areas of recruiting.
So I embarked on building a recruiting database in ACT, the then default database of the time. As a few of us (dare I say ALL OF US) know, SW development in and of itself is a full time job and needs virtually all your focus. Because I had extensive Sales and Marketing background, this allowed me to get off to a fast start in the business. We were doing so well so fast that I had no choice but to forgo all this recruiting software development and go back to old school pen and paper resumes and notes, as Bob had done for many a year. Yes, short term it was the simple solution but long term, pen and paper files would become an absolute nightmare. Software, as we all know, was the only solution.
In recruiting, job searches are arduous and tedious and can take weeks if not months. There was no easy way to organize even though I developed my own special breed of organization or should I say madness. But alas, I was drowning. After all these years, the thousands of candidates and hundreds of companies and reqs, I knew it was time to buy a specialized software for recruiters. So the search was on and it took months. I finally settled on amazing NON-CLOUD based software that will give us amazing capabilities and make my jobs so much easier…once all the data is in. (My closest speculation of when that will be…hoping by June of 2020, or at least it feels like that every day).
The process goes on…MAC to PC format changes, moving of original dates , entering all the resumes and duplicates, breaking down the key words, making groups, configuring the new Software, to name just a few of the tasks, are all so time consuming. My last month has been spent on almost nothing but that, as I am the only one that actually knows what needs to be done. The who, what, when, where and how of the mechanics, every part of it, every nuance of doing it, can only be dome by me! But once it is done, I will be able to find and track everything in seconds. I can follow up and monitor everything you can possibly imagine, as this new software is absolutely amazing. An AE in the Valley doing synthesis and simulation for 5 years …a breeze. An R&D AMS developer in China, no problem and so on and so on.
That means faster searches for companies and more inclusive searches for my candidates. It is exciting to go to DAC and have this as my new talking point. I am changing the fundamental way we do business and it should make a significant difference in how fast we can find the right people. As long as your resume is in our database, you have a greater potential to be considered for a position.
DAC will be a vacation compared to the stress of this project, similar I guess to what most of you go through on a daily basis…I have new respect for you.
As for DAC, it actually looks quite exciting this year. We have a pretty full schedule for all 3 days. It seems like there will be a few more parties as more invites have come my way this year than most others. It looks like most of the EDA vendors are showing as well as all the big Semi type companies as well. And while many were quite pessimistic about DAC in Austin, I think more than a few will be pleasantly surprised. I shall let you know how it went if I do not kill myself getting this new resume software up and running.
