Fairchild Semiconductor’s PSR Controller and Ultra FRFET™ MOSFET Selected as Finalists in the 2010 Golden Mousetrap Awards

Products Recognized in the Electronic Components Category

SAN JOSE, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — April 20, 2010Fairchild Semiconductor’s (NYSE: FCS) PSR controller and Ultra FRFET were selected as best product finalists in the Electronic Components Category for the 2010 Design News Golden Mousetrap Awards.

Fairchild’s half-bridge solution – the Ultra FRFET family– optimizes designs by providing best-in-class reverse recovery time (trr) of 35ns~65ns and the industry’s smallest reverse recovery current (1.8~3.1A). Present LCD TV designs use MOSFETs with two fast recovery diodes (FRDs) and two blocking diodes in a half-bridge circuit to initiate the non-zero voltage switching. The FRDs are used to reduce the reverse recovery current. The blocking diodes prevent the built-in diode of the MOSFET from turning on and eliminate the large reverse recovery current of the diodes. Fairchild’s solution eliminates the need for two blocking diodes and two FRDs in the half-bridge circuit, saving board space and as much as $.20 per design. Moreover, Ultra FRFET has soft recovery performance and a robust diode dv/dt immunity to support better EMI performance, and reliability in fast switching operations at high temperatures.

The FSEZ1307 PSR controller with high voltage (HV) startup and an integrated MOSFET achieves 30mW standby power and is part of Fairchild’s broad portfolio of PSR PWM controllers. The FSEZ1307 simplifies designs, saves board space and meets the increasing demands for power savings. This device minimizes standby power consumption with its proprietary green mode, providing off-time modulation to linearly decrease PWM frequency under light-load conditions. The FSEZ1307 also utilizes TRUECURRENT™, a proprietary topology which enables precise CC regulation and simplified circuit design for battery-charger applications. The FSEZ1307 allows for a low-cost, smaller and lighter charger when compared to a conventional design or a linear transformer.

"Design News congratulates the winners and finalists of the 2010 Golden Mousetrap Awards for the great work they've done to develop new and innovative products for design engineers. These products, as always, showcase the highly imaginative ways that today's engineers are ‘building a better mousetrap,’ and we thank them for their contributions."

For more than two decades, the Design News Awards Program has recognized engineering innovation and creativity in product design. This year, Golden Mousetrap editors gathered a record number of entries and, based on their expertise in each technology area, selected the top products as winners and finalists.
