Analog Devices Expands Portfolio of Precision and Low Cost Amplifiers for Industrial And Instrumentation Applications

New low noise rail-to-rail operational amplifiers leverage ADI's iCMOS(TM) manufacturing process and DigiTrim(R) technology to provide performance and cost advantages

NORWOOD, Mass.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—June 1, 2006— Analog Devices, Inc. (NYSE: ADI), a global leader in high-performance semiconductors for signal-processing applications and the world's leading supplier of high performance amplifiers, is expanding its portfolio with ten new operational amplifiers that address the varying performance and cost requirements of industrial and instrumentation applications spanning the wide operating voltage range of 5 V to 16 V (+/- 8 V). Introduced today are dual and quad versions of the industry-leading AD8661 operational amplifier offering the highest precision at 100uV, and a new series of low cost, low noise amplifiers, that are specified to provide high performance across a diverse level of circuit functions such as reference buffering level shifting and filtering where larger voltage ranges are required. The new products leverage Analog Devices' iCMOS(TM) process technology and DigiTrim(R) technology to reduce the size of circuits without compromising performance, thus enabling lower design costs.

"With the AD866x portfolio expansion, Analog Devices is covering a broader range of performance and price requirements to provide the best value for the precision needs of the industrial and instrumentation market segments," said Steve Sockolov, product line director, precision signal processing group at Analog Devices, Inc. "Designers can get the level of accuracy and wide operating voltage range they need at competitive price points from a single supplier."

Highest Precision Dual and Quad Op Amps - The AD8662, AD8664

Like the single AD8661, the AD8662 (dual) and AD8664 (quad) op amps offer the industry's highest precision at 100uV voltage offset specified at 5V and 16V, and low input bias and rail to rail output, making them ideal for applications that require high levels of DC accuracy, such as industrial process control, motor control, medical instrumentation, and automotive sensors. The devices also offer wider gain bandwidth at 4 MHz for higher speed applications. To meet the needs of small factor designs, the devices are available in tiny LFCSP (lead frame chip scale packaging) (3mm x 3mm) that is 70 % smaller than standard SOIC (small outline IC).

Versatile Performance at a Lower Cost - The AD8665, AD8666, AD8668

In cost-sensitive applications that require amps with a higher level of utility to serve a variety of design needs, the AD8665, AD8666 and AD8668 offer higher performance at a lower price point than competing devices. The amplifiers are well suited for many circuits throughout the signal chain including reference buffering and level shifting, filtering, utility functions, ADC driving, and AC-coupled applications where low-noise and wide operating voltage ranges are important. Designers can use these versatile amplifiers across many different designs reducing the cost of procurement and the overall bill of materials. To meet the needs of small factor designs, the devices are available in tiny SOT-23 in the single version.

All devices in the AD866x family were developed using ADI's breakthrough iCMOS processing technology, which enables higher performance and integration. The AD8662 and AD8664 offer the added benefits of ADI's patented DigiTrim trimming process and the first implementation of thin film fuse which reduces circuitry and design size, resulting in lower manufacturing costs.

The AD866x op amps work well with other Analog Devices' 16V and +/-5V products that require an amplifier companion. These include: ADCs and DACs (AD7322/24/28, AD5530, AD7533, AD5583, AD7224) digital potentiometers (AD5290, AD5260, AD5263), analog front end products (AD7341; AD7707), sensor signal conditioning products (AD22103), and system monitoring products (ADM1024).

Pricing and Availability

The AD8662 is now available in full production quantities. The AD8664, AD8665, AD8666 and AD8668 are now sampling with full production quantities expected in June, 2006. Available in a choice of packaging options, the devices are sold in 1,000 piece quantities with prices starting at $0.58 (for the AD8665). For more information, visit www.analog.com/AD8662.

About Analog Devices' iCMOS Industrial Process Technology

iCMOS (industrial-CMOS) is a modular manufacturing process combining high-voltage CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) and bipolar technologies. It enables the development of a wide range of high performance analog ICs capable of 30-V operation in a footprint that no other generation of high-voltage parts has been able to achieve. Unlike analog ICs using conventional CMOS processes, iCMOS components can tolerate high supply voltages, while providing increased performance, dramatically lower power consumption, and reduced package size. About Analog Devices' DigiTrim(R) Technology

DigiTrim is a patented trimming process that allows production of precision amplifier components at costs up to 30 percent lower than competitive solutions and with higher accuracy, by using internal digital circuitry to adjust specific performance parameters. Because all of the circuitry is on the chip, the parts can be treated as a standard analog product and assembled without any additional processing or trimming. The process is ideal for high volume applications such as automotive sensors and instrumentation, as well as computers and communication systems.
