The ADS1258 offers fixed-channel (125kSPS data rate) or automatic channel scan (23.7kSPS data rate) modes with 20 bits of effective resolution. Traditionally with most delta-sigma converters, the data must be allowed to settle for several readings after switching input channels. The ADS1258 eliminates this requirement by providing fully settled data as each new channel data is obtained.
"Unmatched in speed for a 24-bit delta-sigma converter, the ADS1258 can measure all of its 16 input channels in less than 675us with only 12uVrms of input referred noise, providing breakthrough performance for precision, multi- channel applications," said Mark Berarducci, systems engineer for TI's oversampling data converter products. Other performance features include 0.5uV/C offset drift, a maximum of 0.0010% of full-scale integral nonlinearity and 43mW power dissipation.
The flexible input multiplexer accepts combinations of eight differential or 16 single-ended inputs with a full-scale differential range of 5V or true bipolar range of +/-2.5V. The output of the multiplexer is externally accessible to allow use of a shared signal conditioning block prior to the input of the ADC. Internal switches simplify the monitoring of the supply voltage, temperature and reference voltage. The system clock can be generated using the onchip PLL with a low cost 32.786kHz crystal or an external clock source. Conversions are controlled by either a dedicated hardware pin or software command. The ADS1258's SPI-compatible serial interface connects easily to microcontrollers, including TI's MSP430 ultra-low power microcontroller family.
Availability and Packaging
The ADS1258 is packaged in a QFN-48 (7mm x 7mm) and is priced from $8.95 in 1,000 piece quantities (suggested resale pricing). The device is available now from TI and its authorized distributors. Evaluation modules will be available soon.
