South Bend, Indiana Selects Accela Civic Platform to Modernize City Operations

Accela Land Management Wins Competitive Bid to Help Streamline City Planning and Projects

SAN RAMON, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — October 6, 2014 — Accela, the leading provider of civic engagement solutions for government, today announced the City of South Bend will deploy the Accela Civic Platform. After extensive research and evaluation, the City’s Code Enforcement Department chose the Accela Land Management solution, which will run on the Accela Civic Platform. Accela will replace a legacy client server system as South Bend embraces new technologies to enhance operations and improve its ability to engage with citizens.

Home to more than 100,000 residents on the southernmost bend of the St. Joseph River, the City of South Bend is the fourth-largest city in Indiana and serves as an economic and cultural hub. Accela Land Management will streamline code enforcement processes, and is particularly well suited to support the “1,000 Houses in 1,000 Days” project’s goal to reduce blight in South Bend.

With the new Accela solutions, Code Enforcement Department staff will benefit from mobile functionality and easier access to and use of data, particularly in the field. The Accela deployment will also mean citizens gain an online portal that simplifies communicating and working with the City about code enforcement, improving service for residents and businesses in South Bend.

As they evaluated a new system, the Code Enforcement and I.T. Departments in South Bend prioritized taking advantage of the flexibility of a cloud-based subscription model like the one Accela offers. City employees were equally impressed with the robust nature of the Best Practice Configurations and the cost-effectiveness of a COTS solution.

In addition to using Accela Land Management, the agency will benefit from Citizen Access, a user-friendly web portal that provides an intuitive interface for initiating and tracking information. The solution will extend to iOS, Android and Windows mobile tablets and smartphones, giving inspectors and field agents access to documents in real time and the ability to update project files from their mobile devices.

“Winning the confidence of city officials and employees in South Bend is an important victory for Accela,” said Maury Blackman, Accela president and CEO. “We look forward to the opportunity to prove the value of the Accela platform to South Bend Code Enforcement and to other departments in the future.”
